Cherry Tree Carol

2 Fortune.jpegThe 5th or 6th of January is a discrepancy due to the changing of the calendar in September 1752 because Britain was so out of step with the rest of Europe. Great Britain switched from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar and 11 days were cut from the calendar so that the day after 2 September was 14 September. Many ordinary folk were upset about the change, fearing that their lives had been shortened, and there were riots in protest. Right into the 20th century the day which would have been the church’s celebration of the birth of Jesus was known by some country folk particularly as Old Christmas day.

From the 2017 album “As Fortune Would Have It”.
