The Roving Journeyman

There are several songs from England & Scotland which mention a journeyman. He was a skilled worker in a variety of trades who travelled from one place to another. In Germany there are still people following a similar, though better-organised tradition. The nearest I remember to the traditional journeyman was in the hard times of the 1950s with a man calling out ‘Any odd jobs? Furniture, floorboards, garden!’ as he trundled his handcart loaded with all kinds of tools past our house. He disappeared, along with the rag-and-bone man.
