English Folk Song Suite

Versions of these songs were collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams, George Gardiner & Henry Hammond (who collected more songs than all the others put together), Cecil Sharp, Maud Karpeles, George Butterworth and others. Vaughan Williams scored the suite of folk songs for the Band of the Royal Military School of Music in 1923. His ‘pupil’ and later close musical confidant, Gordon Jacob, made this famous orchestral transcription which is played here by Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Neville Mariner conducting.
