Tradpoles! Our first band concentrating at a Hertfordshire Woodcraft Folk barn dance. Left to right: Peter (caller with bones!), Gillian (viola), Sally (flute), Ken (concertina), Helen (out of sight – bodhran), Emily (bass guitar), Barbie (keyboard). This variation of the band had no name, next to me and my concertina are Peter Shea, Joy Shea, (both experienced callers) Barbie, Sheila Sim wife of fiddler, pianist, brass band conductor and all-round musician, Len Sim. We met as occasion demanded. The photo was taken at one of the evening dances for the annual Hitchin Gathering; I forget the exact year.
About twelve years later Shropshire Occasionals, Shep, Barbie, Alison and Kate, our lovely last band, playing at a posh gathering in the wild heights of Church Preen.
The recordings are solo efforts, I’m afraid, of a handful of the many tunes our bands played so very well. Click on a title to hear the tune.
